Injury blues caused further setbacksto India’s preparations for the coming SAAF football championship, with reliable defender Dipak Mandal and two others released on fitness ground from the coaching camp which began here today.

Mahesh Gawli, who is down with a hamstring injury, and Tomba Singh, who twisted his ankle besides having an injured right knee, made way for seasoned medio Basudeb Mandal, stopper Arun Malhotra and linkman Covan Lawrence, chief coach Stephen Constantine told newspersons.

The absence of Dipak Mandal, adjudged India’s footballer of the year for 2002, has come as a big blow for the team, which is already without the services of Asian Games skipper Bhaichung Bhutia. The Sikkim star, nursing a calf muscle injury, was not considered for the camp.
