Professor recruitment at Pune’s SPPU: same 111 posts advertised again as process stalled for 2 years

The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) in Pune, which has been facing a faculty shortage, has again invited applications to fill 111 posts of professor, assistant professor, and associate professor. A similar call for invitations for the same posts, made in December 2023 and September 2024, was stalled.

In the November 4 circular, the university announced that the posts of 32 professors, 47 assistant professors, and 32 associate professors would be filled. These are the same posts that have been advertised for the past two years but have not been filled.

The window for submission of online applications is from November 8 to December 7, while the deadline for submitting documents is December 22. Candidates who have already filled out the recruitment form after the previous two advertisements can edit their applications if they wish to do so. New candidates who have not previously applied can also apply for the posts at admin.unipune.ac.in/recruitment.

Process halted in October, December 2024

The appointments will be based on the rules released by the Higher and Technical Education Department in October 2024 regarding professor recruitment to non-agricultural universities in the state. The rules were meant to initiate and streamline the recruitment process for public universities struggling with low faculty numbers. Following the announcement of the rules, multiple state universities put out advertisements for recruitment.

However, the process was halted in December 2024 when then Governor C P Radhakrishnan instructed the Vice Chancellors of these universities to pause the process, citing the model code of conduct for the State Assembly elections. Questions were raised over this move as the instruction to halt the process came after the elections were over and the model code of conduct had already been lifted.

SPPU under faculty shortage crisis

Sixty-two per cent or 238 of the 384 government-sanctioned faculty positions at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) in Maharashtra lie vacant, The Indian Express reported in September. Over 75 per cent of the posts are lying vacant in Departments like Biotechnology, Anthropology, History, English, Sociology, Sanskrit and Prakrit, and Foreign Languages. In a worrying trend, out of the 220 university-fund positions at SPPU, only 98 are filled and 122 lie vacant in September 2025.
