CHANDIGARH, Aug 14: Out of four Indian boxers selected for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Kuala Lumpur from September 11 to 21 were seen in action at the Haryana Model School, Sector 10 ring in Panchkula today. This was part of the training schedule of the Indian boxers. N Dinko Singh (bantam) and Gurcharan Singh (light heavy) had `useful practice’ session during the ongoing Haryana State senior, junior and sub-junior meets.
While N Dinko Singh was pitted against Rajesh of Haryana, Gurcharan could not find a equal partner in the light heavy category. He exchanged punches with Harpal, Indian heavy weight probable. Despite slippery ring (due to morning rain), Dinko Singh carried too many guns against his opponent. As the bout progressed, the army boxer opened up and unleashed his punches in a systematic manner to outplay his opponent in all departments of the game.
The Indian team had brought computer scoring equipment with it from Patiala. Dinko scored 45 points against four by Rajesh. “Use of computer scoring gives the true picture of the fight. Technically, the Indian boxer was far superior. Points are recorded only if three judges press the buttons simultaneously,” explained G S Sandhu, who has been appointed manager of the Indian team.
“Gurcharan is shaping very well. He is unable to find a suitable practice or competition partner. Here heavy weight Harpal had to exchange punches with Gurcharan,” said Sandhu. The score was 11-0.
Gurmeet Singh (feather) and Jatinder Kumar (middle), the two other members of the Commonwealth team, accompanied the probables but on the advise of the doctors, they did not come to the ring. Gurmeet was feeling pain in his arm while Jatinder was down with fever.
Another Indian probable Ramanand fought against Vikram Tayagi of Haryana. The former won by 27-7. However, the spectators enjoyed the most the bout between Surinder Gill and Bhushan Saini, both Indian campers from Haryana.
The result was a draw!
BI Fernandez of Cuban, attached with the Indian camp, instead of predicting India’s chances of winning any medal in the Commonwealth Games, said “chances are there only if the boxers take part. If a boxer is not allowed to compete how can he win a medal.”
