
Padukone in IBF council
BANGALORE: Prakash Padukone, the executive president of the Badminton Association of India, was on Friday elected to the Governing Council of the International Badminton Confederation at the general elections of the IBF held at Hong Kong.
According to the information received here, Padukone has been elected for a term of two years. The former All-England champion is the second Indian, after TPS Puri, to get elected to the premier body in world badminton.

MUMBAI: Top stars, including national champions Chetan Baboor of Karnataka and Kasturi Chakraborthy of Railways whould be seen in action in the All India Masters Table Tennis Tournament at the Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers Company Limited sports complex at Bharuch from Saturday.
Prize money worth Rs 50,000 and Rs 40,000, for men and women respectively, will be at stake, a release stated.
Bagga flies
MUMBAI: Former National champion, Rajiv Bagga today left for Germany to play in theInternational Badminton Championship for the Deaf to be held at Bayreuth from May 21-23 followed by another event at Stuttgart from May 30-31. Bagga is the deaf Olympic title holder since 1989. He will rush back in time for the Grand Prix circuit starting from June.
Golfer of the Year
MUMBAI: Vijay Kumar has been declared the Mahindra quot;Golfer of the Yearquot;, a press release stated here today. The Lucknow-based Indian golfer topped the Golf Rankings of players on the Professional Golfers Association of India PGAI tour with a tally of 406.5 points to bag Rs 4.8 lakh award. Twice Indian Open winner, Ali Sher came in a distant second with Firoz Ali of Calcutta finishing third.
Delhi8217;s Monish Bindra won the Rookie Golfer Of The Year Award.

CALCUTTA: India8217;s Digvijay Singh was placed in the third position with a score of 70 after the first round of the Pan West Malaysian Amateur Open Golf Championship being played at Tiara Melaka Golf and Country Club course in Melaka.CameronPercy and Goeff Ogilvy were tied for the first spot.

NEW DELHI: A four-member team will represent India in the fourth women8217;s Junior World Weightlifting Championship to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria from May 18-24. An official release said here today that the team had been cleared by the government.
