India win four titles in Lanka

CHENNAI: Joshna Chinappa led the Indian assault in the inaugural Sri Lanka Open Junior Squash Championship pocketing the girls8217; under-15 and under-17 titles, defeating Malaysia8217;s Lim Yok Wah in both finals. Joshna defeated Wah 5-9, 9-4, 9-0, 9-2, in the under-15 final and 9-6, 9-5, 9-1 for the under-17 crown.

Mumbai8217;s Alisha Mashruwala entered the under-13 and under-11 final. She defeated Tamani Jayawardhana Lanka 9-0, 9-0, 9-0, in the under-11 final, but lost to Sally Looi Malaysia 0-9, 0-9, 1-9, in the under-13 final.Mumbai8217;s Naishad Lalvani won the boys8217; under-11 title defeating compatriot Jay Bhagat 9-7, 9-6, 9-1 in the final.

Moya for Chennai

CHENNAI: Spanish ace Carlos Moya, ranked No 1 in the world earlier this year, will participate in the Gold Flake Open Tennis here from Jan 3-10.

Moya, the 1998 French Open champion, had made his debut in the Gold Flake Open earlier this year, but disappointed his legion of fans by pulling out of hisquarterfinal match with a blistered thumb.

Moya is the second big name after Yevgeny Kafelnikov to confirm his entry.

Mumbai second

MARGAO: Laxmibhai National Institute of Physical Education LNIPE, Gwalior, downed Goa University 2-0 to lift the West Zone Inter University men8217;s football title, here today.

Mumbai University bagged the second place beating Devi Ahilya University 6-2, while hosts Goa came third with three points. LNIPE logged seven points and Mumbai University six. The highlight of the Mumbai Varsity8217;s victory a hat-trick by Abdishak Yadav who scored five goals.

Assam impress

BANGALORE: Assam and Chandigarh began their campaign with impressive wins in the league matches of the 16th Sub-junior National handball championship today.

Group D: Chandigarh 26 Sanjay 11, Manoj 9 bt Karnataka 21 Raghavendra 9; Group E: Assam 22 Dhruba Jyoti Dutta 11 bt Haryana 17 Devender Kumar 9

Award for Anup

NAGPUR: International Master Anup Deshmukhchess and Madhuri Gurnule athletics were awarded the best sportsman and sportswoman of the year trophies by the Sports Journalists Association of Nagpur SJAN.

Madhya Pradesh Ranji cricketers Rajesh Chauhan, Narendra Hirwani and Amay Khurasia graced the occasion.

Other awardees: Amar Mohite badminton, Anagha Khot volleyball; Special award: Jagdish Karnewar cricket.

Shooting meet

AHMEDABAD: The rifle shooting competitions in the open sight and peep sight air rifle and .22 rifles of the 9th GV Mavlankar Shooting Championships begin here on Friday. Though only a qualifying tournament for the Nationals, several records are expected to be rewritten.
