As his government maintained that the Vadodara violence was not communal, Chief Minister Narendra Modi visited the city today and warned rioters “whichever community they belong to, the law will do its duty”.
Though he did not go to the Walled City area—barring sporadic incidents, Vadodara was calm today and the Army staged a flag march—Modi called on the injured, most of them Muslims, at the SSG Hospital and warned rioters of strict action.
“No unsocial element or rioter will be spared nor allowed to take the law into his hands,” he said, calling for peace and reminding people of Gujarat’s remarkable progress in the last four years.
Modi said he was in constant touch with the Union Home Minister and had asked for additional reinforcements as a precautionary measure. Declining comment on allegations of police inaction, he said: “If anyone believes that justice has not been done, they can knock on the doors of courts but they cannot take the law into their hands.”
“The state Home minister is camping here and officers familiar with Vadodara have been depolyed to assist the police commissioner,” he told reporters.
At SSG Hospital, Modi met the injured, asking them questions like “How did you get hurt?”, “Is the treatment here good?”
Rickshaw-puller Yasin Vora told him he was hit on the shoulder during police firing. “Don’t worry. Now I am here, everything will be alright,” the CM assured him.
