KOCHI, JAN 21: Diana King Live. In Kochi for the first time.

“I never thought I would come back to India so soon. India is very special to me. Like home — from the people, to the food. I feel at home here,” Diana gushes, sporting a new look with her hair dyed.

Why the white hair? A girlish giggle. “I wanted my hair to be blonde. But I overdid it.”

No trace of hauteur, expected from an international singer. Just naivete.

Diana has so far produced two albums and is in the process of another, probably by next month. Famous for her songs Shy Guy and L-L-Lies, Diana however, became an international success with her rendition of the Diana Ross song Say A Little Prayer featured in the film My Best Friend’s Wedding. Her latest song to hit the charts is Think Like a Girl.

“No, I am not anti-guys. Men don’t try to understand women, the way women do. They do not even try. I want a man to understand me as I understand him,” Diana elaborates.

Does it mean she is afeminist? She just laughs.

Diana King has blended sensual tropical reggae with the deep soul American R & B, and her innovative hybrid style has brought her success in the pop world.

“I have listened to all sorts of music and my music is the way it is because I don’t have a favourite. I mix different music to make my own.”

She has certainly made her own. “All my songs are about me, in some way,” she says, somewhat shyly.

Does she like Indian pop?

“I do. In fact, I would like to collaborate with an Indian troupe. Like Colonial Cousins.”

Asked about whether she would emulate Madonna in bringing an album in Sanskrit, she replies, “I would certainly like to.”
