The police have booked an IPS officer and two others for the murder of a driver, Nitim Sharma, in Jammu last week.

The police say Sharma allegedly had an affair with the officer’s daughter. He went missing on Wednesday. On Friday, his body was found in a canal in Greater Kailash.

The accused, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Karnail Singh, is posted as Commandant 6th Battalion of the India Reserve Police (IRP). The other accused, Special Police Official (SPO) Naresh, has been arrested, said the SSP Jammu, Mukesh Singh.

Karnail Singh, however, denied the allegation. ‘‘This is an attempt to malign my image,’’ he said. He added that he did not know Naresh.

Singh said: ‘‘There are people who are not happy with my posting. The allegation of the deceased having an affair with my daughter is disparaging.’’

Inspector General of Police, Jammu zone, S P Vaid, said the Jammu SSP had been asked to monitor the investigation.

The DIG, Jammu-Kathua range, Niaz Mehmood, said the police have recorded the statement of Naresh, who is a key link in the case.
