Rattled by the strong reactions in India over the nudging of BCCI chief Sharad Pawar, Australian captain Ricky Ponting today sought to put the lid on the controversy by offering to apologise for the incident which, he said, was not meant to embarass anybody.

Admitting that the whole episode had dampened their maiden Champions Trophy victory, Ponting said his team did not mean to show disrespect to Pawar. 8220;I8217;m a bit disappointed some of the gloss has been taken off, but I8217;ll be doing the best I can to get to the concerned people in India to get my point across,8221; Ponting said.

8220;We were all pretty keen to get our hands on the trophy and celebrate, so I8217;ll be making an effort today.8221;

Ponting said the Australians would do their bit to close the chapter of this unpleasant issue. 8220;We were all pretty keen to get the photo taken and get off the stage and enjoy the moment for what it was. If there needs to be anything done from the Australian cricket team8217;s side, I8217;m more than happy to do that and hopefully it can be forgotten about and we can move on.8221;

Asked if he would consider tendering an apology to the BCCI supremo, Ponting said: 8220;It probably will, yeah. Once I8217;ve spoken to him and get an idea on how he8217;s taken the thing and not just what8217;s been said by the Indian journalists and what a fuss they8217;re making of it, if it is required I8217;ll certainly do it apologise.8221;

Meanwhile, Pawar himself has downplayed the controversy, saying television channels were hyping something that was unintentional. At the Economic Editors Conference in New Delhi today, he declined to comment on the issue and said: 8220;This is an agriculture conference. If you wish to know about cricket, please contact Rajiv Shukla BCCI media committee convenor,8221; raising peals of laughter.
