CHENNAI, OCT 16: AIADMK supremo Jayalalitha on Monday said she would prove her innocence in the TANSI land deal case in the higher courts.
Jayalalitha, who was sentenced to three years RI in the case by a special court, in a message to her partymen on the eve of the party’s 28th foundation day, which falls on Tuesday, said “I firmly believe that I will prove my honesty in the higher courts.”
Like the DMK government, which had appealed in the Supreme court against the Madras High Court’s verdict discharging her from the case, she had every right to appeal against the special court’s judgement, she said.
She said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi had `conspired’ against her to prevent her from contesting the elections. It was also an attempt to `destroy’ the AIADMK, she charged.
However, these attempts would not succeed as the party stood like a rock, she said.
Meanwhile, hundreds of AIADMK volunteers today held demonstrations in various parts of Tamil Nadu to protest against the Centre escalating the costs of petrol and petroleum products recently.
In a related development, Tamil Maanila Congress too has said it would consider organising a joint agitation with the co-operation of all secular parties in Tamil Nadu against the hike in the prices of petroleum products.
TMC president G K Moopanar, after meeting state Governor Fathima Beevi to present over 40 lakh signatures collected from the public protesting against the hikes, told newsmen that “we will consult the consumers before chalking out our next course of agitation’.
