• Why is it that India does not represent the Kashmir issue to the world while Pakistan does such a fine job with its lobbying? K Maddali

I do not agree with your perception. The Kashmir issue is a bilateral matter between India and Pakistan which needs to be resolved under the parameters provided in the Shimla Agreement and more recently the Lahore Declaration.

NEXT WEEK: MAHESH BHUPATHI

As significant as Mahesh Bhupathi’s mixed doubles triumph with partner Elena Likhovteseva at Wimbledon last week was his post-win remark, that he was ‘‘playing better’’ after his split with Leander Paes. The 28-year-old, one of contemporary Indian tennis’s most successful and celebrated faces, has been playing his own game since he split with his doubles partner for the second time in three years. Questions linger: will Bhupathi and Paes reunite again for the love of their careers and the game? Will they ever repeat their Wimbledon ’99 feat? It is incorrect to state that DD channels have failed in the face of stiff competition. DD is a public broadcaster and accordingly, has a number of commitments not faced by private channels. This is not to say that there is no scope for improvement. In fact, competition stimulates improvement.

Insofar as a 24-hour news channel is concerned, DD did start such a channel. However, in a restructuring exercise, the Prasar Bharati Board decided to close it down. The frequency of news bulletins on the national terrestrial channels has, nevertheless, been increased.
