There was no bullying, nor the marauding stuff and heroics. But defending champions Indian Airlines made short work of Universities XI with a 6-1 victory to register their third successive win in their Pool A match of the 61st senior National hockey at the Begumpet Stadium here today.

Lazrus Barlus opened the account with a penalty corner in the 9th minute. Before Barla drew the first blood, Halappa, who had a ball in the first two matches, failed to convert a couple of PCs. Girish Pimpale hit the second goal in the 17th minute of Indian Airlines’ fifth penalty corner.

The defence was challenged for the first time in the tournament with some good moves by the Universities wingers in the first half.

Sukhjinder Singh managed to reduce the margin in the 20th minute but that was the only time that the rivals came near the Airlines’ goal.

Baljinder made the score 3-1 in the 45th minute and Altaf-ul-Rehman packed two blows in the 60th and 67th minutes. While the first came as a result of brilliant combination with Halappa, the second one was scored after the latter’s aim rebounded off the goalkeeper. Halappa scored one minute before the hooter.

Punjab and Services also posted their third successive wins over Gujarat and Bhopal Red. Gagan Ajit Singh did the trick for Punjab striking in the 12th, 17th and 32nd minutes. Daljit Singh and Gurjant Singh scored two goals apiece.

Harprit Singh converted 3 penalty corners for Services and D Mahalik and Sunil Ekka scored a brace apiece.
