The Mirwaiz Umer Farooq-led Hurriyat Conference and other separatist leaders have been invited to an exclusive conference on Kashmir to be organised by an Italy-based NGO in Kathmandu next month. The four-day meet is being organised by Nobel Peace Prize awardee Pugwash International and begins on December 11.
The conference will see the participation of around 80 prominent figures, including peace activists and journalists from India, Pakistan and PoK, and members of thinktanks from US, UK and other nations. Other than Mirwaiz, separatist leaders who have received invitations include Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leader Yasin Malik and J-K Democratic Freedom Party leader Shabir Ahmad Shah. A former Union secretary, considered an old hand on Kashmir, is understood to be playing an important role in getting the separatist leaders on board.
Sources said the recently floated options on solving the Kashmir issue would come up for the discussions at Kathmandu. According to sources, Kathmandu has been chosen as the venue to ensure greater participation of Kashmiri separatist leaders as getting there won’t require passports. Apart from Mirwaiz, who has been given a travel document for a period of three months, the travel documents of most of the separatist leaders have been impounded. Sources said Mirwaiz, Malik and Shah are willing to attend the meet ‘‘if allowed by the authorities’’.
Confirming he has got an invite from Pugwash secretary-general Polcotta Romusin, Shah said he would ‘‘like to attend any conference which aims at looking for a viable, amicable and practicable solution on Kashmir’’. It was, however, not clear whether the other Hurriyat faction led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been invited to the meet.
