A week after the outlawed Kanglei Yawol Kanba Lup (KYKL) issued a pledge that it would ‘‘clean up’’ the state’s Education department and abducted a senior IAS officer I.S. Laishram for having allegedly taking bribes from teachers during his earlier stint as education commissioner, a massive search operation has been launched in Chandel district to track down the officer.
The KYKL, police said, has a strong presence in the district. The outfit said it would put the officer on trial in its own court on September 6. More officers have been identified who would meet the similar fate, the outfit has warned.
Chief Minister Iobi Singh, in Delhi right now, has ordered prompt police action. Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani has also been informed about the matter, sources said.
Meanwhile, various organisations have appealed to the outfit to release Laishram without any harm. While the Manipur Secretariat Services Association today asserted that Laishram has an untarnished career record, the All Manipur Government Employees’ Organisation has appealed to the outfit to release him immediately.
