NCP chief Sharad Pawar wondered as to how he could become Prime Minister since his party had only 14 members in Parliament.

Shiv Sena Supremo Bal Thackeray, in an interview published in party daily Saamna on Tuesday, had described Pawar as ‘Prime Ministerial material’ but the company of Congress had ‘tainted’ his image.

“How can a party which has 14 MPs eye the Prime Minister’s post,” Pawar said.

The Sena chief had said he wanted a ‘Marathi’ to become the country’s Prime Minister but the person at the helm should have a free hand to govern and should not survive on the ‘patronage’ of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

He also dismissed Thackeray’s demand for 50 per cent reservation in houses built in Mumbai for Maharashtrians.

“He (Thackeray) may have said due to elections ahead,” Pawar said.
