Honour killings are still rampant in Pakistan thanks to the ‘‘indifference’’ of the government to curb the brutal practice, noted Pakistani human rights activist Asma Jahangir said here.
‘‘Honour killing is very much there in Pakistan. It still takes place in significant numbers,’’ Jahangir, a former chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, told PTI here.
Holding the ‘‘official indifference’’ as a major factor behind the misery of women in Pakistan, she said: ‘‘The state has not sought to eradicate traditions which prescribe honour killings nor ended the impunity of perpetrators of such killings.’’
Asked about the role of the rights organisations in curbing the social vice, Jahangir shot back, ‘‘It is only because of the human rights groups that you have come to know about such a practice.’’
