Highway robbers arrested

8220;Later we found out that they were members of a gang which had been involved in a series of highway robberies. The gang leader, Munna, is already in jail,8221; said DCP south P.K. Srivastava. The four robbers who were arrested yesterday have been identified as Mohmammed Idris, 40, Farid Khan, 23, Jahid, 25, and Babloo, 23. After Munna8217;s arrest, Idris had taken charge of the gang.

DCP Srivastava said the gang used to move around in a white Maruti Gypsy and a Maruti Van. One of them, usually Idris, would scout for a truck on any highway and stop it, posing as a police officer or an excise official.

The other members of the gang would join him later and force the truck driver to drive to a deserted area. Then they would tie up the driver and his companions and abandon them on the way. The goods were usually unloaded in a rented flat and later sold to specific customers. For each strike, the gang took a new flat on rent.

Srivastava said the consignment of the Henko has been recovered. The police have also found the consignment of copper wires, looted from a truck in Dilshad Garden last month, and a consignment of insecticide, stolen from Vasant Kunj last year. These were found in a godown in Malviya Nagar.
