Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar bowled the fastest ball in cricket history and topped it with a whirlwind 43 off 16 balls but couldn’t prevent England from beating his side by a convincing 112 runs in a crucial Group A match at Newlands today.
Chasing 247 for a win, Pakistan were shot out for 134. The margin of defeat would have been much more had it not been for Shoaib’s heroic last wicket stand with Saqlain Mushtaq. Pakistan will play India next Saturday.
Earlier, bowling in only his second over, Akhtar warmed up with a 158.4 kmph delivery and gradually built up speed to finish the over with 161.3 kmph (100.23 mph). The delivery remains the quickest recorded in an official cricket match.
