
There are certain herbs which have a reputation for building up health and prolonging life. These herbs contain elements which are conducive to longevity. Some of these herbs have been found to contain powerful anti-oxidants, more powerful than the artificial anti-oxidants added as preservatives to our food. Here is a brief outline on the usefulness of some of the more important herbs considered valuable in increasing one8217;s life span.
Brahmi
Brahmi, botanically known as herpestis monniera or bacopa monniera, is a well known Indian herb. The herb is a cardiac and nervine tonic and purifies the blood. It strengthens mental faculties and its use has been found valuable in several disease, including nervous disorders, loss of memory, stoppage of urine, rheumatism and debility 8211; conditions which are quite common in old age.
According to the Charak Samahita, an ancient Indian medical treatise, the herb cures all kinds of diseases and bestows longevity.
Tulsi 8211; the holy basil
Basil is a well known sacred plant for us Indians. The leaves and seeds of the plant are medicinal; they sharpen memory, remove catarrhal matter and phlegm from the bronchial tubes, strengthen the stomach and induce copious perspiration. A decoction of the leaves boiled with powdered cardamom in half a litre of water and taken and mixed with honey and milk, will bring down the temperature in fevers. A decoction of the leaves mixed with honey and ginger, is an effective remedy for bronchitis, asthma, influenza, cough and cold. The use of basil has been found beneficial in cardiac diseases and in reducing the level of blood cholesterol.
Recent studies have shown that the leaves significantly protect against stress. It has been suggested that even healthy persons should chew 12 leaves of basil twice daily, morning and evening for preventing stress. It will also purify blood and help prevent several common ailments. However, it is advisable to consult your doctor before using these herbs.
