In a cruel twist of fate, Chief Operating Officer of WorldTel, Samir Singh, 31, was killed in a road accident in the city late on Saturday night, an eerie repeat of the car crash on January 27, 2003, near Nagpur in which his former boss and WorldTel founder-CEO Mark Mascarenhas perished. Police said that Singh, who was driving his black Opel Astra alone, came out of a hotel off MG Road before midnight and met with a head-on collision with a private tourist bus a kilometre away. The mishap took place at 11.40 pm near MEG Centre in the Ulsoor Traffic Police station limits. While Singh was returning to his office-cum-residence at Defence Colony in Indira Nagar, the bus with just four crew members was returning to the city from a nearby dargah. The bus driver, Ijaz Ahmed of Jabbar Travels, has been arrested, the police said.‘‘Investigations are still in the preliminary stage and we are yet to ascertain the cause of the accident,’’ said a police officer. However, police suspect that Singh lost control when he tried to overtake another vehicle at a very high speed and then rammed head-on with the bus coming from the opposite direction. The car has been completely destroyed and the bus partially damaged.
