Even as Haryana BJP leaders kept up their campaign against Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala following the police lathicharge on a party demonstration at Faridabad on Saturday, the party high command sought to downplay the incident today.

BJP general secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi today disclosed that the party’s national president M. Venkaiah Naidu and Delhi unit president Madan Lal Khurana spoke to Chautala this morning and sought action against the police officials responsible for Saturday’s lathicharge at Sector 29 of Faridabad.

However, Haryana BJP Legislature Party leader Krishan Pal Gujar claimed that ‘‘they (the police) were under instructions from Chautala to assault us.’’

‘‘We have apprised Deputy PM L.K. Advani and party president Venkaiah Naidu about the incident and requested them to permit us to get rid of Chautala. He is out to finish the BJP in the state. People will desert us if we remain mute onlookers while the Haryana government goes on inflicting sufferings on them.

Chautala is particularly cross with me because I have been exposing his misdeeds within and outside the Assembly. We hope the party high command would not disappoint us. It may take sometime to dump Chautala but it will surely act. Der ho sakti hai per andher nahin,’’ Gujar said.

Haryana BJP vice-president Kishan Singh Sangwan, MP from Sonipat, also alleged that police officials had acted on ‘‘specific instructions from Chautala. He is hostile towards BJP leaders who have been critical of his anti-people and anti-farmer policies.’’

Sangwan added that the BJP would launch a statewide agitation against the ‘‘atrocities and the reign of terror let loose by Chautala against his political opponents.’’ Chautala, he said, had a ‘‘sinister design to lower the image of the BJP.
