NEW DELHI, November 5: It was another day of high-scoring in the 16th Nehru-ONGC sub-junior hockey tournament (under-15) at the National Stadium here today.

Powered by a six-goal effort, including a hat-trick from Gurnail, and four goals from Rajinder, Khalsa Academy School from Amritsar led the field with a 15-0 drubbing of Government Boys High School (Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir).

Government High School (Gurgaon) thrashed G S Kumar Vidyalaya (Gujarat) 10-0, Sat Guru Pratap Academy crushed G G S Khalsa School (Chandigarh) 9-2 and Torban Junior Schgool (Manipur) defeated V S Agriculture (Kheragarhi, Delhi) by a 3-1 margin in the other matches of the day. Khalsa Academy outplayed the team from Poonch and dominated the proceedings from start to finish that the boys from Kashmir were hardly allowed to have a close look at the Amritsar team goal. While the winners earned as many as 11 penalty corners (they, however, could convert just two of them), the Poonch team had no luck at all.

Rajinder started the goal-glut in the sixth minute and added three more in the 18th, 51st and 54th minutes. Gurnail’s goals came in the eighth, 15th, 29th, 34th, 38th and 44th minutes. He scored his team’s seventh, eighth and ninth goals in the space of nine minutes. Hardev (13th, 48th), Sandip (39th, 55th) and jagshir (22nd) were the other goal-getters for the winners who led 7-0 atbreak. Gulshan scored four goals and ramesh Kumar found the target twice as the Gurgaon team outplayed G S Kumar Vidyalaya from Gujarat after leading 5-0 at the breather. Karandip, Pawan Kumar, Dharamvir and Jatinder scored the other goals fro the winners who converted one of the 10 penalty corners awarded to them. The Gujarat team did not earn any corner.

After trailing by a fifth minute goal, Khalsa School, Chandigarh found the equaliser through Sandeep Singh in the 13th minute but found the Sat Guru Pratap Academy from Ludhiana too hot to handle and went down 9-2. The losers’ second and final goal came in the 59th minute after the winners had taken a 9-1 lead. Gurcharan Singh showed the way with three goals while Gurdarshan (2), Manjit Singh, harinderjit, Harinder Singh and Sukhdeep Singh were the other goal-getters for the winners. Ravinder Pal scored Chandigarh’s second goal.

Th banty Singh, L Mraja Kumar and Ksh Sumesxanta scored once each for Torban Junior School (Manipur) while Sunil Kuamr was the lone scorer for Kheragarhi school.

Khalsa Academy, BAV Inter College (Meerut), Children Academy (Bhopal) and Sat Guru Pratap Academy have topped their respective groups and will now play on knockout system, the winners qualifying for the super league. The two losing teams will fight it out for the consolation trophy. The winners will join six seeded teams in the super league. The seeded teams are: St Ignatius High School (Gumla), Adarsh Vidyalaya (Varanasi), D A V (Shahbad), Birsamunda Vidyapitha (Rourkela), BRC (Danapur) and Lyallpur Khalsa Senior Secondary School (Jalandhar).
