GURGAON, JUNE 14: Farmers from local villages staged a demonstration at the office of the Haryana Urban Development Authority HUDA demanding an amendment in the rules relating to land acquisition and compensation.
In a recent order, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had reduced the land compensation amount paid to the farmers following an appeal filed by HUDA. The farmers had taken legal recourse earlier by filing petitions against 8220;inadequate8221; land compensation given by the government in different cases. However, the HC judgment slashed the compensation amount which meant that the farmers will have to return the enhanced compensation.
The Kisan Sangharsh Panchayat, in a memorandum submitted to HUDA, have demanded that the Land Acquisition Act be amended so that the cultivable land of the villages is left out. The samiti said that land in proportion to the rural population should not be acquired so that it can be utilised for future housing by the villagers. The compensation should be paid in a lumpsum.
