Gujjar stir: Centre rejected Raje’s letter, says BJP

BJP has claimed that the Centre has rejected Rajasthan CM Raje's letter recommending reservation for Gujjars.

Claiming that the Centre has rejected Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje’s letter recommending reservation for Gujjars, the BJP on Thursday accused it of ‘inflaming’ the agitation for political gains.

The saffron party, whose government in Rajasthan is facing the Gujjar ire, continued to put the onus of granting ST status for them on the Centre, saying such decisions are the prerogative of the Union government.

“The Centre has rejected Rajasthan Chief Minister’s letter recommending reservation for Gujjars without even discussing or studying it,” party’s vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said in New Delhi.

He alleged the Centre’s rejection of the letter along with Congress leaders’ statements blaming the BJP government showed that the ruling party was out to make political capital on the issue.

“The Congress-led Government is more interested in reaping political gains out of the agitation rather than carrying out its constitutional responsibilities. It is trying to add fuel to the fire,” he said.

Raje had written a letter to the Prime Minister earlier this week recommending 4 to 6 per cent reservation for Gujjars in the category of denotified class of tribals/nomadic tribe in a bid to put the issue in the Centre’s court.

Naqvi’s comments came on a day the Gujjar agitation spread to the capital with members of the community disrupting roads and rail traffic and clashing with policemen.
