A red alert has been sounded in Gujarat following the blasts in Mumbai. Security and vigilance has been stepped up in public places, markets, multiplexes, railway and bus stations, and places of worship.

DGP K. Chakravarthy said the police and paramilitary forces have been put on high alert. ‘‘I have spoken to several officers to step up vigilance and security checks in sensitive areas,’’ Chakravarthy said.

CM Narendra Modi also held a meeting with Minister of State for Home Amit Shah and Home Department officials to review the situation. Condemning the blasts, Modi said they were ‘‘a conspiracy to weaken the nation and an act of semi-terrorism to create anarchy in economically progressive states of India. By targeting centres like Mumbai, Gujarat, Hyderabad and Bangalore, and innocent people, these terrorists only show their distorted mentality.’’

He said: ‘‘When such incidents occur to weaken the nation, pseudo-secularists and activists maintain a convenient silence, which provides further strength to such dangerous anti-human forces.’’
