BERLIN, SEPT 7: Triple world champion Maurice Greene announced that he will not participate in the 100 metres at Tuesday’s Golden League meeting here and will only run in the 200 metres.

For once, though, Greene will not take centre stage as Denmark’s Kenyan-born three-time world champion Wilson Kipketer attempts to make it seven Golden League wins out of seven in the 800m and assure himself of a share of the million dollar bonus.

Romanian distance runner Gabriela Szabo, who won the 5000m title at the world championships, is the other athlete eligible for the bonus — if both athletes win they only have to compete at this Saturday’s Grand Prix finals unlike last year where they had to win to collect their money.

Kenyan 3000m steeplechaser Bernard Barmasai, the world record holder, will also run in Berlin and has suggested that if he wins he will contest the decision by the IAAF, the sport’s ruling body, to bar him from sharing the bonus.

The IAAF eliminated him last Monday after finding the 25-year-old guilty of asking compatriot Christopher Koskei, who went on to win the world title, to let him win in the Zurich Golden League meeting last month.

Greene, who is in the middle of negotiations with 200/400m world record holder Michael Johnson over a three series race of head to heads next year, said he was to skip the 100 for purely financial reasons.

The “Kansas Comet”, who likes to call himself the phenomenon, became the first man to win both the 100m and 200m titles during last month’s World Championships in Seville.
