Though there were hundreds of scams in the country, even during the NDA regime, involving amounts much more than this Rs 64 crore, Bofors has become a very sensitive political issue, and people are eagerly waiting to know why H.R. Bhardwaj sent B. Datta to the UK on the issue of the frozen bank accounts of Ottavio Quattrocchi, who is still the subject of red corner notice. Bharadwaj8217;s over-enthusiasm to defreeze Quattrocchi8217;s account only to created more problems for the Congress and its president, than he actually resolved. It is much better if he had resigned and cleared the air of doubt.

8226; Apropos of the editorial, 8216;Shooting ourselves8217; IE, January 16, the comment on the typically double-faced response of our politicians is appreciable. But the argument that 8216;development8217; means 8216;displacement8217; is absolutely untenable. 8216;Development8217; is all about improving the lives of all. A tremendous improvement in GDP at cost of human welfare can never be the sign of development, prosperity and progress. Consequently, if development causes displacement, it must come with proper and adequate rehabilitation, particularly of the most downtrodden.

Managing Haj

8226; Haj stampede though shocking has unfortunately become a routine event. It is fair to say that the stoning ritual is inherently fatal but even then a better, more efficient and more professional crowd management can certainly save many lives. The management of Haj pilgrimage has to be allotted to professional event management concerns adept at handling crises and disasters. Moments of frenzy cannot be allowed to get the better of religious devotion.

Treat animals well

8226; Maneka Gandhi8217;s stand against the film, Rang De Basanti must be applauded and supported by all right thinking people. Animals are exposed to several inconveniences and abuses while shooting by film makers whose interest is only to get the correct shot or angle. Often the helpless creatures are caged, chained and exposed to an alien and unfriendly environment without food and water. Uncomfortable transport and unfamiliar surroundings also cause trauma to them. If rules are made stringent against the abusive use of animals, the entertainment industry will certainly show more compassion to these dumb creatures before using them callously.
