8226; It is heartening to watch the Indian cricket team come of age 8216;No need to mourn, match showed India on top, Aussies fading8217;, IE January 23. Living in an alien country like Australia where people are fanatical about their sport and worship their sportspersons, so far it has been a nightmare going to work or school after a match in which India played. Aussies by nature are fun loving and do not spare an opportunity to have a dig at someone for anything, if they get a chance, all in a light sense of course. It should be said they can laugh at themselves.
The present Indian cricket team under the stewardship of Saurav Ganguly is doing a wonderful job and has won the hearts of not only the Indian fans, but also the 8216;True Blue Aussies8217;! After Ajit Wadekar8217;s team of the late seventies, this team has become a force to reckon with. Well done Saurav and his boys! They are good in batting8212;the tail no longer starts after the third wicket and there8217;s excellent bowling. If there is any negative remark to be made, it is the tolerance the captain shows to his teammates. They must learn from Steve Waugh.

Mahajan8217;s pride
8226; Pramod Mahajan is making irresponsible statements by saying that Sonia Gandhi and her two children cannot hold the highest position of primeministership in India because it hurts his national pride! Where was his national pride when thousands were killed, raped and burnt alive in Modi8217;s Gujarat? Where was his national pride when L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi instigated a crowd to destroy the Babri Masjid? Where was his national pride when George Fernandes was reinstated right after being caught in the Tehelka exposure? He had never condemned any of these acts? Are they observing the ethos of India? Are they honest people? Are they more Indian than Sonia Gandhi and her two children?

Time past
8226; Munnar evokes distant memories 8216;Remnant of the Raj8217;, IE, January 23. In the fifties there was the Konalar a meandering stream and a resthouse right in the shadow of Anaimudi Peak No 2 8212; and the gleam of the limpid river water in moonlight was so glorious! At the foot of a steep and bald head of mountain, I saw my first rare black panther back in 1952.
Unforgettable, the elephant herds marching along ancient paths when one got into the sholas between grass mounds. The rest house had no electricity. It was just a log hut redone but had an elevated verandah with wiring and a bulb! Answering my curiosity it was explained that Dagger, the secretary of the planters club and his son, will arrive on his mobike in the evening and rev up the wheels to connect to the wiring and have a bulb burn for a while! Perhaps this is an apocryphal story but so charmingly ingenious!

Nobel contrast
8226; A.B. Vajpayee is the right candidate for a Nobel Prize 8216;Us and Them8217;, IE, January 24. But I cannot understand how a terrorist, hypocrite, liar and fraud like Pervez Musharraf can be named as a likely candidate. It will be a disgrace to the Nobel Prize.
