Grant citizenship to West Pakistan refugees: BJP

The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the BJP has asked the Centre and the State Government to grant citizenship rights to West Pakistan refugees who migrated to the state during partition.

The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the BJP has asked the Centre and the State Government to grant citizenship rights to West Pakistan refugees who migrated to the state during partition.

“We seek immediate grant of citizenship to West Pakistan refugees so that they could exercise the right to vote in assembly and municipal elections”, BJP vice-president Hari Om said.

These refugees would be able to own immovable property, secure government jobs, and admissions to the technical and professional institutions in the state if the authorities grant them citizenship, he said.

Describing them as victims of communal politics the BJP leader said they cannot be treated shabbily.

Drawing comparisons between West Pakistan refugees and Muslims who migrated to Jammu and Kashmir from China in 1952 and from Tibet in 1958, he wondered why the refugees from West Pakistan couldn’t be treated the same way.
