Stressing that the government was committed to preserving CBI’s professional autonomy and integrity, the Prime Minister has said that there is no political interference in its work.
PM Manmohan Singh was speaking after laying foundation stone of CBI Headquarters at CGO Complex here today. Outlining role of law enforcement agencies, Singh said, “Terrorism was the biggest threat to nation’s internal security. Institutional mechanisms must be involved for improved information sharing between Central agencies, state governments and international counter-terrorism partners to scuttle designs of militants.”
He asked the CBI to pursue the terrorists related cases and develop a central data base of terrorists, insurgents, which can be shard with state police forces.
He also stressed enhancing technologies for crime detection. ‘‘India’s vulnerability to cyber crime is escalating as our economy and critical infrastructure become increasingly reliant on interdependent computer networks and internet,” he added.
About CBI’s role in fighting corruption, Singh said that he would appreciate if the agency suggested to his government useful improvements in systems, procedures, rules of the concerned arms of governance which could help reduce the scope for corruption.
He denied that the government was interfering in the Bofors investigation in wake of recent defreezing of London bank accounts.
