Uttar Pradesh Congress leaders will, perhaps, remember today’s meeting with Governor T.V. Rajeshwar more than the memorandum they submitted on law and order under Mulayam Singh Yadav’s government.

It brought back to them memories of 1995-96 during the time of Motilal Vora when the doors of Raj Bhawan were always open and their petitions welcome.

‘‘Earlier (during Vishnu Kant Shastri’s tenure), our memorandum used to be thrown into the waste paper basket the moment we left the Governor’s chamber but this time, we are sure the new Governor will seek explanation from the Mulayam government on issues raised by us,’’ party spokesman Akhilesh Pratap Singh said. The Governor asked the leaders for clarification as the Congress leaders had left out of the memorandum several points that they sought to make.

‘‘Hum log aapko kal sari detail denge (We will provide every detail to you tomorrow),’’ one of the leaders said but the Governor immediately directed Principal Secretary Shambu Nath to jot down each detail being given by members of the delegation.

While the delegation had an appointment for about half an hour, they spent around 50 minutes with the Governor.

And the Congress was to bring a delegation of 15 while it brought 21 but the Governor was not complaining.

‘‘Aap log itna bada delegation lekar aaye hain (you have come with a large delegation),’’ was all Rajeshwar said.

‘‘The Governor listened to our grievances against the Mulayam government patiently and promised to take appropriate action,’’ said state Congress chief

Jagdambika Pal as he stepped out of the Governor’s Blue Room after posing with him for a photograph.

‘‘The Mulayam government has failed on all fronts to provide good governance to the state for which we had extended support to his government. This government has lost the moral ground to continue in the office even for a single day,’’ Pal added.

Earlier, the Congress staged a demonstration at GPO Park on the Hazratganj crossing to press its demands.
