Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has formally complained to his counterpart in Rajasthan and sought immediate action after reports that a group of girls from Goa were molested in a train.

A group of 57 girls from the Home Science College, Panaji, were molested in a train in Rajasthan in the last week of October. The incident came to light only after the girls returned to Goa. The college authorities, however, are silent on the incident.

“I am raising the issue with Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and will see to it that stern action is taken against the culprits,” Kamat told The Indian Express.

According to eyewitnesses, around 200 youths boarded the Jodhpur-Howrah Express at Nadbai in Bharatpur district. They were going to Jodhpur to appear in a test for the post of police constables. They attacked and molested the girls as the train was passing through Dausa.

According to the students, the youths masturbated in front of them. They even climbed on the sleeping girls and attacked them. The males who were present in the bogey kept mum as the girls cried in vain. Even the female teachers accompanying the students were molested, the girls said.

After the protest by Kamat, the Rajasthan police have registered a case and arrested five youths who have been remanded to police custody. Most of the youths were from Bharatpur district. The Rajasthan Police have formed a special team and launched a search operation in different villages to nab the culprits. “Most of the boys have run away from their villages but we are after them,” said SP (Railways) Rohit Mahajan.

Mahajan also apologised for the incident. He said a group of rowdy boys have brought a bad name to the state and serious action will be taken against them.

A state like Goa, where incidents of such nature are a rarity, is still shocked over the incident and the Chief Minister has said that he will personally monitor the case.

“I am deeply hurt by the incident. One can imagine to what extent such boys can go if selected for police posts,” he said.
