
KUALA LUMPUR: Argentina were back on track to defend their World Youth Football title after demolishing England 2-1 to enter the quarter-finals. The Argentines, determined to avenge their stunning 4-3 defeat by Australia in the league, took their revenge on unbeaten England at Johor Baru.
They took charge from the start as Roman Riquelme converted a penalty in the ninth minute and star midfielder Pablo Aimar increased the margin in the 26th. England hit back after the break when James Carragher pulled one back in the 48th minute. Argentina’s win set up an explosive quarter-final clash against favourites Brazil.
Lesbian complaint
SYDENY: Australia’s Flying Bats Lesbian Soccer Club lodged an official complaint with local football authorities over unfair decisions from referees and jibes from the sidelines that went unrecorded. The Flying Bats run five teams in a Sydney women’s league, including an under-16 side.
Designer uniforms
PARIS: French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent is to provide the uniforms for the 2,600 officials at the 1998 Soccer World Cup, according to a contract signed in Paris on Wednesday. The firm will also prepare the uniforms for the roughly 300 female and male staffers at the final-round draw which is to take place in Marseilles on December 4.
