
Border named interim coach
MELBOURNE: Former Australian cricket captain Allan Border was confirmed today as the World Cup champs8217; interim coach for next month8217;s tour of Zimbabwe.
Border takes over from Geoff Marsh, who retired as coach at the end of Sri lankan tour.
Australian Cricket Board chief executive Malcolm Speed said: 8220;Allan has worked with captain Steve Waugh and the team previously when filling in for Geoff. He has been coach of Australia A and the Australian under-19 teams, making him well suited to this interim role.8221;
Olympics China
BEIJING: China has set up a 76-member committee to organise Beijing8217;s bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, the People8217;s daily reported. The Beijing 2008 Olympic bid committee is headed by Beijing Mayorliu Qi, the communist party newspaper said.
China had been reluctant to consider another attempt to host the Olympics after Beijing lost out to Sydney for the 2000 Games, its bid beset by controversy over China8217;s human rights record and Beijing8217;sserious air pollution.
Schumacher woes
BERLIN: Two-time world champion Michael Schumacher ruled out making a return to drive for the Ferrari Formula One team in the European Grand Prix on September 26.
The 30-year-old German, recovering from a double fracture in his leg, was examined on Sunday by doctors who said he still needed a further four weeks before taking his place on a Formula One grid.
