Navratilova best-ever, says Graf

BERLIN: Retired German tennis legend Steffi Graf nominated her former arch-rival Martina Navratilova as unquestionably the best player of the century on the women’s circuit. “For me, she is the uncontested number one, she has left a mark on the sport like no one else,” Graf said.

She also spoke about Navratilova’s kindness, recalling a letter she had sent to her when, aged 13, and suffering from a thumb injury, she was stuck in a hotel room in Australia. Navratilova wrote, “You still have lots of time. Don’t worry, your time will come.”

Magiet convener

JOHANNESBURG: Rushdie Magiet became South Africa’s first non-white convener of selectors when he was appointed ahead of three other National selectors, including Mike Procter and Clive Rice.

Magiet takes over from the retired Peter Pollock.

Olympian dies

MUENSTER (GERMANY): Reiner Klimke, Germany’s most successful Olympian who won six gold and two bronze medals in dressage, died followingtwo heart attacks in as many weeks. He was 63. A practicing lawyer, Klimke also won six World Championship titles and 10 European titles.

SEVILLE: In keeping with the staunch tradition of track and field’s world governing body, PrimoNebiolo, who has steered the organisation’s growth for 18 years, will be re-elected president for a sixth term on Wednesday.

The 76-year-old Nebiolo will be the only candidate on the ballot.
