AHMEDABAD, Aug 13: The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday directed the State Government to provide police protection to all courts in the State.
The judgment was delivered by a division bench comprising Justices R K Abichandani and A L Dave in the course of hearing a temporary bail application moved by one Pravin Maganbhai. Maganbhai sought temporary bail to enable him to attend the last rites of his brother, who was killed in the court premises at Dhrangadhra.
The court directed the government to place on record details of the incident as also of other murders in court premises. On July 14, 1998, the additional public prosecutor submitted that three murders had taken place in court premises at Surendranagar, Amreli and Bhavnagar over the last one-and-a-half-year.
The court had, on July 14, directed the State to reply as to what action it had taken so far. The court also wanted to know if the issue was ever considered at the highest levels in the relevant ministry. To this, State pleader Prashant Desaisubmitted that the government will provide necessary police protection to all the courts in the State as demanded.
