MUMBAI, MAY 3: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police today submitted status reports to the Bombay High Court on their probe into the alleged involvement of former social welfare minister Babanrao Gholap in misuse of funds belonging to various corporations under his ministry.
The high court had directed the police to file status reports in the hearing of a petition filed by social worker Milind Yavatkar. The petition had alleged laxity by ACB and EOW in the conduct of probe and urged that investigations be directly supervised by the high court.
While the ACB, following directions by the Special ACB court, is inquiring into the assets of Gholap to determine whether any of them were disproportionate to his known sources of income, the EOW is looking into allegations that the minister and his relatives allegedly received Rs 40 lakh in kickbacks for transferring Rs 4.5 crore from various corporations to the Awami Mercentile Co-operative bank which was facingliquidation.
Counsel for Yavatkar, P Janardhan today furnished documents to provide fresh material to the court on Gholap’s alleged involvement in corruption cases.
Noting the status reports on record, Chief Justice Y K Sabrahwal and Justice S Radhakrishnan opined that at this juncture the court should not interfere with the investigation and posted the matter for further hearing to June 21.
