A German statesman, a Czech supermodel and a Swedish Olympic ski champion were among those whose search for peace and sun in Asia was shattered by tidal waves.

Petra Nemcova — who appeared on the cover of 2003 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue — was carried away with her boyfriend, fashion photographer Simon Atlee, after a huge wave plowed into Phuket on Sunday. She survive with sever injuries,but Atlee id still missing.

Former German chancellor Helmut Kohl was on holiday in Sri Lanka. Kohl and his entourage were evacuated yesterday from a hotel in the south. Swedish skiing great Ingemar Stenmark was sunbathing in Thailand when the wave hit. Troy Broadbridge, an Australian rules football player, is missing form Phuket, where he was on his honeymoon.

Several Italian soccer players — Filippo Inzaghi, Paolo Maldini and Gianluca Zambrotta — were caught in the waves in the Maldives but were unhurt. Jet Li and his family evacuated to Qatar, after their hotel in the Maldives was hit by waves. —AP/PTI
