
CHANDIGARH, Feb 11: Geologists and environmentalists from all over the country took part in the seminar on Geological Aspects of Environment, which was held here today at Geology department, Punjab University.
The main topics discussed during the seminar were mining activity and environment, geochemical and biogeochemical pollution of rivers and lakes and ground water pollution.
B.K. Das from Centre of Advanced Study in Geology, Punjab University talked about his study of Himalayan Lakes. He said that the bioindicators had been studied in Himalyan lakes to assess their implications.
A.D. Ahluwalia, CASG, P.U. spoke on the seismological repurcussions of Pokhran nuclear explosions. He said that the studies had indicated an earthquake in the region to begin with.
Speaking on the interaction between living organisms and their environment, V. Subramanium, Jawaharlal Nehru University concluded that biochemical cycles helped us look into fundamental processes.
