NEW DELHI, SEPT 12: With a view to curbing gender-specific violence in society, Delhi police personnel, including senior officers, will undergo a gender sensitisation programme as suggested by the Police Commission Report of 1994.
The five-day programme, to be inaugurated by City Police Commissioner Ajai Raj Sharma in the tourist resort of Surajkund in Haryana on Tuesday, is being organised by the Police Training College and Gender Training Institute. According to Dr Ranjana Kumari, GTI director, a non-governmental organisation working for women8217;s empowerment, it was felt that those who were part of the law enforcement machinery should become sensitive to the finer aspects of the social process.
The Police Commission Report, she said, observed that the police organisation, as it stands today, is unfit to discharge its duties unless the training course incorporates sensitivity in handling the cases of women and weaker sections. quot; The sensitisation process involves learning and unlearning after identifyingthe underlying mechanisms and biases, and making visible the invisible power structure that perpetuate violence, quot; said Kumari, who is also the general secretary of the Mahila Dakshata Samiti.
