A week after she was gangraped, a 24-year-old woman committed suicide at her residence in the city on Wednesday morning.
On New Year’s Eve, the woman was raped by five youths at Hotel Ashok Palace in Shahibaug area. On Wednesday, her body was found hanging from a dupatta suspended from a hook in the ceiling at her Indrabaug Society house in Usmanpura area. She was rushed to a hospital in Navrangpura area but was declared dead on arrival.
Three of the five youths named in the complaint — Chandan Jaiswal, Madan Jaiswal and Sugam alias Montu Jaiswal — have been arrested while a police team was to leave for New Delhi on Thursday to nab prime accused Sajal Jain. Another accused, Karan Jain, is absconding.
Sources close to the family said the woman had been in shock since the incident and had restricted herself to her room. They also said since that day, she refused to meet anyone, including relatives and close friends.
A suicide note found by the police substantiates this observation. According to the letter written by the victim, she was resorting to the extreme step because she had ‘‘brought embarrassment’’ to the family. The letter states the guilty should be punished at any cost, especially Sajal as she had loved him.
