England midfielder David Beckham again played the role of spectator as the Los Angeles Galaxy resumed their Major League Soccer campaign with a scoreless draw against Toronto FC on Sunday.

Beckham had all but ruled himself out of a place in the Galaxy squad 24 hours earlier, as he continued to rehabilitate his injured left ankle.

To the disappointment of a BMO Field record crowd of 20,522, Beckham8217;s prediction proved correct, and although he took a seat on the Galaxy bench before kickoff, he was dressed in a suit and tie.

Beckham has already missed three SuperLiga group matches and it was not clear when he will make his MLS debut. However, he said this weekend that it would be counterproductive to rush his return at the expense of his longterm usefulness.

8220;I8217;d love to be out there on the field, especially with the number of fans here and the fact they8217;ve paid a lot of money to see the Galaxy. But I have to be careful with my injury,8221; he said.
