While RLD chief Ajit Singh, who quit the Union Ministry today, has directed party MLAs to withdraw support to the Mayawati government, the Chief Minister can breathe easy, but only for the timebeing.
The Rashtriya Lok Dal has 13 MLAs in the government and withdrawal of their support will bring down Mayawati’s strength in the House from 227 to 214.
To claim majority in the 406-member House, Mayawati needs the support of 204 MLAs. Sources revealed that Ajit directed his flock of MLAs to withdraw support to the Mayawati government to settle scores with Vajpayee Government.
RLD MLA Samar Pal Singh, who was demanding withdrawal of support, said: ‘‘I knew one day such a situation will emerge but nobody was ready to take me seriously.’’ Ajit was meeting party legislators from UP late tonight and was not available for comment despite repeated attempts.
