Freed after serving a 10-year prison term in Pakistan on spying charges, Indian national Ram Prakash could not enter India on Tuesday for failing to possess valid travel documents. He was sent back to Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore, for which India put the blame on Pakistan.
Prakash, 51, arrested by Pakistan a decade ago, was released from Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore this morning following an order from the Interior Ministry as he had completed his prison term.
A senior official of the Indian Immigration Authority at the Attari border said they did not allow Prakash to enter India due to “lack of identification and other travel documents”.
“We have told the Pakistani official that they have to follow certain rules for repatriation of the prisoner. The antecedents of the prisoner would have to be confirmed by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad,” the official said.
Reacting to Pakistani media reports that Indian officials at the Wagah border refused to accept Prakash, the Indian High Commission in Islamabad issued a statement saying: “The High Commission of India was not intimated about the planned release of Ram Prakash and hence could not issue travel documents to him.”
