April 1: FR Agnel Gymkhana, Vashi, and Income-Tax entered the final of the Franco Sports-sponsored Rev Bro Anthony Cyprian Memorial Football Tournament, conducted by the D’Assisi Ex-Students Charitable Association (DECA), at the St Francis D’Assisi ground, Borivli, on Saturday.

Fr Agnel defeated Union Bank of India 3-2 and Income-Tax overpowered Mumbai Customs by an identical margin.

The Fr Agnel Gym-UBI match was a bit rough and referee Xavier Faria had to caution both the teams. Fr Agnel wrested the lead through Seby Andrews in the tenth minute and Binoy Kuruvilla equalised for UBI.

Five minutes before the breather, Vijith Shetty and consistent scorer Tolomen D’Silva put the issue beyond doubt for the Vashi lads. Ryan D’Souza reduced the margin for UBI.

Neil D’Costa scored of a pass by Caitano Fernandes in the 16th minute to put I-T one-up against Customs. Caitano also had a hand in the second I-T goal which was scored by Baptist Lobo in the 18th minute. Baptist made it 3-0 for the taxmen when he struck again following a pass by Neil.

Raza Rizvi scored from the spot’ to make it 1-3 for Customs and Sydney D’Silva made it 2-3 off a pass by Francis Fernandes.

M&G Area best

M&G Area defeated Amateur Riders Club (ARC) 6 1/2-5 to emerge best in the Maharashtra and Gujarat (M&G) Area Cup Polo Tournament, sponsored by Glucon D Heinz, at the Mahalaxmi race-course ground, on Saturday.

Navjit Sandhu (2), JS Shekhawat (3) and GS Pandher scored for the winners. Vishal Singh (4) and Dinyar accounted for the losers.
