A former chief justice of Gauhati High Court, Justice (retd) T.C. Das, will head a judicial inquiry into the September 30 police firing at Garo Hills region in which nine people were killed and more than 100 injured.
The decision was taken at a Meghalaya cabinet meeting yesterday, Chief Minister D.D. Lapang said today. Since a sitting judge of the Gauhati HC was unavailable, the retired judge has been roped in, he added.
The government had on October 3 decided on a judicial probe into the firing that led to tension in Tura town in West Garo Hills district and East Garo Hills district headquarters Williamnagar on September 30.
Both the district administrations had already ordered magisterial inquiries into the incidents.
The CM further said the Cabinet meeting also put its seal of approval on the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) Amendment Bill for introducing it in the coming Assembly session, beginning next week.
The approval to the proposed Bill, believed to have been drafted following the Chief Secretary-headed state level committee recommendations on the MBOSE revamping, is being strongly protested by the Opposition, NCP and other Garo outfits. The outfits, which want a review of the panel report, feel it gives too many powers to the Shillong regional office.
Meanwhile, the resignation letter of Meghalaya deputy CM Mukul Sangma is yet to be accepted by Lapang, who is consulting the ruling coalition in this regard. The CM said the resignation letter is ‘‘not yet’’ accepted. ‘‘I am consulting the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance partners.’’
On media reports that former home minister and senior Congress leader R.G. Lyngdoh would replace Sangma, Lapang said there was no such move.
