The group’s name may well qualify for the spelling contests but Wielkopolanie likes to keep it simple. And it’s best done by sticking to traditions. The folklore group from Poland has come to Chandigarh under International Exchange Programme courtesy Ghungroo Musical Club, Chandigarh. The club has organized International Heritage of Music and Folk Dance Festival- 08 from November 21 to 26, another in the line of Finland, Czech Republic and Saint Paul Reunion France.
The aim of the Polish group is to cultivate the musical and vocal traditions of Wielkopolska and sub regions of Poznam. Over the years they have developed Polish national dances like Polonaise, Mazur, Karkowiak, Oberek and Kujawiak and 12 regional artistic programmes. Wielkopolanie also prides in having taken Polish folklore to five continents of the world, been round the globe six times with over 3000 performances. Among the awards, ‘An Oscar Kolberg’s award’, ‘Patron of Polish Folklore’ and ‘Medal of Society Polonia’ remain the group’s most cherished.
Spanish dancer Chadija Aisha is also accompanying the troupe. She dances Spanish bathuka, flamenco and modern dances. Look forward to some interesting performances like belidi, saidi, veil dance, dance with fire, belly dance with Bollywood fusion and Greek cifti teli. While the group have already performed at St Stephen School and Sector 17 Plaza, their next performance will be in Sunam and return to Government College of Girls-11, Chandigarh, on November 26. Book a seat!
