The harsh realities of an Indian tour have dawned on the South Africans after their loss on the slow turner at Bangalore. Specially so on the first-time sub-continent tourist Justin Kemp, the man who was dubbed as the ‘Next Kluesner’ and South Africa’s answer to MS Dhoni before the series.

After his 28-run contribution in South Africa’s abysmal 169 – their lowest in India, Kemp talks about the complex assignment at hand. ‘‘Hyderabad was different, Bangalore is much like what we expected before the tour started. But I hear Chennai and Kolkata might be like any of these either,’’ says a confused Kemp as he packs his bag for Chennai on the morning after the Bangalore game.

Before the tour started, Kemp had a two-point agenda: to be patient with his game and draw all the knowledge from his experience here. But after two games, Kemp hasn’t quite achieved those goals. After his unbeaten 46 in Hyderabad he might have thought that he was on the right track but Bangalore has changed that.

But despite that Kemp is confident. ‘‘I have grown in the game with each day, each match, each performance,’’ he says.

Knowing this the seniors in the South Africans camp are not putting any pressure on the young man. South African captain Graeme Smith has said: ‘‘He (Kemp) is definitely a rare breed. But players like him should be left at what they can do best. No point hassling them.’’
