Uttar Pradesh DGP’s wife and Samajwadi Party MLA from Balrampur Geeta Singh is at the centre of a controversy. A PAC constable, Shohrat Singh, has lodged an FIR against Geeta, wife of Yashpal Singh, with Kotwali police in Gonda district.

He alleged that she, along with some men, had beaten up some PAC jawans and tried to grab a bungalow meant for use of PAC’s (Provincial Armed Constabulary) 30th Battalion Commandant.

A case has been lodged on his complaint, said SHO, Gonda Kotwali, R P Singh.

‘‘Since the matter is under probe, we are yet to make any arrests,’’ Gonda Additional SP J Singh said on Monday. Singh also holds the post of SP.

PAC claims the bungalow has been in possession of PAC since 1970. The commandant’s post has been vacant since November 2004. Incidentally, DGP Yashpal Singh held the post from April 6, 1977 to Oct 10, 1978. He was also Gonda SP from August 1, 1980 to March 12, 1983.

It has been alleged that on Dec 24 a group led by Geeta clashed with the jawans. ‘‘Around 9.10 am five vehicles reached the main gate. Geeta madam, her gunners and two other women got down. She started abusing us when we prevented them from entering the premises. Showing us a document (baynama), she asked us to leave. We requested her to talk to our seniors before entering. Then her men misbehaved with us. They broke open the door and entered,’’ PAC jawan Ramsagar Yadav, who was present at the main gate, said. He said they first damaged the nameplate inscribed ‘Aawas, Sena-nayak’. Another constable Tika Ram, said that ‘‘madam’’ left around 7 pm. ‘‘Finally, senior PAC officers and police reached the spot and evicted Geeta’s men,’’ Tika said.

PAC sources said the building is Nazul (under government control). ‘‘It belongs to one Vijay Laxmi Bhatnagar, of Delhi…,’’ said a PAC officer requesting anonymity. The building is currently under the control of the Rent Control Officer (RCO).

The officer said that in November 2004, the then commanadant M A Jain went abroad. ‘‘…Geeta applied to the RCO for allotment of the bungalow as she was Balrampur MLA. She could not get it done,’’ he said. In August last, the RCO declared the house “vacant” and invited allotment applications, he said, adding, ‘‘PAC saw it a ploy to allot it to Geeta. A revision petition was filed in Gonda district court.’’

He said the court stayed the RCO’s order till disposal of the revision. ‘‘…a case was filed in HC against the stay. A close confidante of Geeta allegedly got the power of attorney from the landlady,’’ he said.

Neither Geeta, nor the DGP could be contacted on phone for their version.
