Rahul goes East to win city8217;s heart
Addressing an impressive crowd consisting mainly of women and youngsters gathered right opposite the Rajiv Gandhi Super-Specialty Hospital that is being constructed by the Delhi government, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi addressed his first election rally in Northeast Delhi on Wednesday.
While the rally was held in Seemapuri, a reserved category Assembly seat and a Congress stronghold, Gandhi also toured the streets of East Delhi with a roadshow earlier in the day. Though the rally was primarily meant to send a strong message to BSP chief Mayawati, who hopes to make inroads into Delhi and eat into the Congress vote this time, the 39-year-old leader took on the BJP directly and accused them of a 8220;lack of vision8221;.
8220;I was going through the website of VK Malhotraji and realised that most of the webpages were about the Congress and less about the BJP8217;s vision for Delhi,8221; he said. In Delhi after touring Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh8212;, Rahul said that the BJP has not been able to initiate any development in these states and is therefore resorting to terrorism as an excuse.
Also present for the rally were Congress MPs Jagdish Tytler, Sandeep Dikshit and Sajjan Kumar and DPCC chief JP Aggrawal and CM Sheila Dikshit.
Maya tries to rally Sultanpuri, again
ADDRESSING her third rally in Sultanpuri area on the last day of campaigning, BSP supremo Mayawati played her last trump card along with the promises she has been making for voters in Delhi. She promised to crack down on crime in the Capital 8220;on the lines of action taken in Uttar Pradesh8221; and make it a crime-free zone.
The Sultanpur police station, incidentally, is among the five police stations with the highest crime rates in the Capital. In terms of heinous crimes like murder and kidnapping, it ranks first.
Mayawati urged voters, especially from the lower strata of castes and sections, not to be lured at the last-minute with money and other gifts to vote for other parties.
8220;Political parties have done nothing concrete for the last 60 years. Vote BSP to power in Delhi and the Centre, and reservation would be given to upper-caste poor and the Muslims,8221; she said.
She also accused the 8220;other parties8221; of 8220;taking donations from the capitalists8221; and said that BSP is the only party which is 8220;funded by the common man8221;.
Modi in city8217;s west to win over the rest
8220;One of the last wishes of Mahatma Gandhi was to disband Congress in a free India. It is time we fulfill his dream.8221; The opening words of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi invoked Mahatma Gandhi to woo voters away from the Congress. Modi was addressing a crowd of nearly 2,000 to 2,500 people at Nangli diary close to Najafgarh on Wednesday, the last round of Modi8217;s public meetings.
The audience sported BJP caps with saffron sashes around their necks. Women outnumbered men, a majority of them, however, clueless about Modi8217;s identity. 8220;I was told to come, so I reached the venue. I don8217;t know who is coming,8221; said Indira Devi of Roshnapura, Najafgarh.
The Gujarat CM arrived late at the meeting, but no one was complaining, as Haryanavi folk songs kept the crowds entertained. Modi arrived at 5.10 pm and for next 20 minutes the crowd remained glued to their seats. Touching upon the issue of electricity: 8220;I have heard that here even the Prime Minister and UPA chief Sonia Gandhi run their households on generators. In Gujarat, even villages do not experience powercuts. Are you very rich? How you can afford to pay such high electricity bills?8221; Modi asked as the audience clapped His one-liners were, however, what drove the crowds hysterical. 8220;Congress does not have neta, niti or niyat Congress does not have leaders, policy or even the intention.8221;
